How to use Clay & AI for Segmentation
and Newsletter Audience Analysis
Hey, Claymaker.
Welcome if you’re new! Claymation is quickly approaching 1,000 subscribers of GTM Operators, Founders, Investors, and Sales Reps who are thinking differently about the future of GTM.
Today we’re diving into segmentation and how to do it in Clay.
A few things inspired this post (besides this being one of the most important things you can do for GTM):
’s (who writes Mostly Metrics) Complete Guide to Customer Segmentation
A cybersecurity customer I’m working with (we’re helping this $Billion company enter a new TAM with Clay)
Curiosity to better understand the audience Claymation is attracting
I really like how CJ defines segmentation:
Segmentation is the process of dividing up your customers based on shared characteristics, with the goal of building a sales process that caters to their needs.
This isn’t just about TAM analysis, territory planning, and improving outbound prospecting.
It can have measurable impact to your bottom line. CJ goes onto explain:
Great segmentation results in lower CAC (customer acquisition cost) and higher LTV (Life Time Value). If you intimately understand the pain point, psychological predisposition, and procurement structure of your target buyer, it allows you to search in the right place, craft the best message, and scope out the buying process more accurately. That results in lower dollars spent to acquire the customer, and higher retention.
This is why your enrichment + GTM data strategy isn’t something to skimp on.
You’re literally holding your sales team and company back from achieving greater results.
Data can also help you enter a new TAM more effectively + run better experiments to figure out what works. This is what I’m helping a unicorn cybersecurity company with.
To warm up this TAM - we are segmenting outreach and messaging by the following:
Industry
Size of company
Tech Stack
Presence (or lack) of a specific team
Size of the team
Company growth
Whether the company has had a data leak
Based on the above, we’re aligning conditional messaging to align value prop, how it relates to the company’s situation, and persona.
Now bringing this back to Clay… let’s dive into how to do this in the platform.
The Objective
To better understand my audience’s composition:
Seniority
Team/Persona
The Process
It’s pretty simple. Export CSV from Clay and kickoff some enrichments.
In the future, I hope to connect Zapier to my email so that I can add subscribers automatically to the list as I get sign up notifications.
The Claygent Prompt
My previous post is a good primer on Claygent and how to use Claygent to find & analyze 10-k reports.
For this example, this is the prompt I’m using to classify titles into seniority & team.
Be sure to define the outputs so the data is structured in an easy way to use:
The Output
Note: from the person’s LinkedIn, I also found and enriched the company info. I wasn’t expecting to see Visa & Chase or the Texas Health and Human Services to pop up.
The next step is to analyze this data and create some visualizations. We’ll save that for Part 2.

Hoop - Automated AI To Do List
This is one of my favorite AI productivity tools.
I use it daily an obsessed with it.
In a nutshell - it listens for action items and to dos across Zoom, Slack, & Email and then automatically creates a to do list for me. If you’ve met with me on a Zoom, then you’ve likely seen it join our call.
I’ve partnered with them so you can get $15 off your first month. Use the code ALEX in the promo box when you sign up. Sign up:
